Fun Kids Experiments with Baking Soda

Baking Soda is versatile and fun kitchen ingredient. Also known as Sodium Bicarbonate it is naturally found in the mineral Natron. What makes it fun is that when it comes in contact with moisture and some kind of acidic compounds (lemon, vinegar etc.) it fizzes up.

It’s therefore great for kids to have fun with, and learn about Chemistry on the side. So if you’re looking for some fun experiments to do with baking soda that your will make your 5 year old squeal in delight, and your 9 year old interested in more, then try the experiments listed below!

  1. Black Snake: Remember ‘Saanp’ the discreet Diwali cracker (not sure you can call it that) that was available when we were growing up. Little black tablets that you lit fire to, and they’d grow, curl and curve and become these horrible little worms (not really snakes)? Well guess what, they included Baking Soda! You can actually make a snake with your kids. Take a look at how:

2. Erupting Volcano for Kids: Get your kids excited about natural phenomenons and the wonders of Volcano through this easy volcano for kids experiment.

3. Silly Slime: Show your kids how daily household items like Shampoo and Baking Soda can be so entertaining. They can make the slime, mess around with it, and just wash it down the drain. You can use Shampoo, body wash (colored and glittery for most fun), or a Liquid Soap of some kind. It doesn’t have to be harsh, a mild shampoo too will do the trick!
